Hi, my name is Joan Stuards . A professional writer, editor and teacher, I have spent my career improving the writing of others while working to hone my own voice in personal essays, magazine features, travel books and book reviews.
My students benefit from this breadth of experience in many ways. As a writer myself, I understand how agonizing the task can be. But over the years I have road-tested nearly every writing technique invented and have come up with a short list of the ones I know really work. In the end, students I work with do more than produce terrific college essays: they become better writers for life.
I learned most of what I know about teaching writing at Brown University. As a Rose Writing Fellow, I received extensive instruction on the writing process and worked as a writing tutor for three years. Since then I have taught creative writing at Boston University, where I received my M.A. in Fiction; arts criticism at High Five Tickets to the Arts’ Teen Reviewers and Critics program here in New York; and writing and editing at NYU’s American Language Institute.
I began college essay tutoring in 2006, when as an artist-in-residence with the Teachers & Writers Collaborative I was asked to teach a weekly essay-writing class at the Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem. To prepare, I read every book and website available on college essay writing, culling examples and exercises I still use today. In addition to tutoring, I teach writing and editing to international undergraduate and graduate students at NYU.
